Your Health Directly Relates to Your Mindset

Living a life of vitality is a journey, and we're here to guide you. Healthy living looks very different for everyone.
Over the years, we realized there was one big difference in our clients who make improvement and those who don’t. No matter the diagnosis, the answer is not found in one exercise, medication, or diet plan… There is no magic bullet solution when it comes to health.
So what does actually make a difference?
We find progress isn't made until you identify the root of your motivations, habits, and mindset. We boiled this process down into smaller pieces to help you address your health mindset. Changing your mindset allows you to take charge of your health TODAY. No matter what the current status of your health, you can avoid a victim mentality by changing the narrative.
What is Your Why?
As we stated before, we start by helping our clients determine WHY they want to get better. And with this step, we caught on to a pattern. Those who make improvement believed they CAN get better, no matter where they were starting from. They embrace challenges because they know that's where improvement lies.
The first step toward healthy living is to start thinking about WHY you're seeking health. This answer looks different for everyone. Without a purpose or understanding of how you want your life to be better, you can't move forward.
So think about your why….
Is it to have more energy throughout your day?
To spend more quality time with family?
Be able to travel?
Improve your athletic performance?
Remain independent in your own home?
To have better control of your pain?
Now, keep this why in mind for the next step of starting to identify your health habits. Better yet, write down your why somewhere you can see it on a daily basis! And as we stated above, health is an evolving journey, and your why should reflect that. There are no rules for identifying your why. You might have more than one and it will change over time.
Now that we have a clear idea of your why the next step is to focus on adopting a growth mindset.
What is a Growth Mindset?
The next step is to identify a fixed or growth mindset. The differences in mindset produce different health outcomes. Which is why it is important to identify where you're at. Your approach to adopting healthy habits depends on your current mindset.
A patient once told me, “I don’t know if you actually believe I can get better, but you make me believe I can.” This is the root of our role as healthcare providers. The only factor that matters is whether we can instill a mindset of growth and positivity in those we work with. Again, this process looks different for everyone but the underlying theme of mindset is a constant.
Let’s take a closer looks at the differences in mindset.
Carol Dweck Ph.D. is a psychologist known for her research on mindset, in which she details in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. She noted mindset falls into two major categories, a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. It's possible to have areas of your life in which you have a fixed mindset and others where you have a growth mindset.
Those with a fixed mindset view themselves as having fixed traits or characteristics. We're either born smart or athletic or we aren’t. We're born with traits that aren't changed through practice. A person with a fixed mindset is out to prove themselves. They feel the need to validate their perceived talents and gifts. On a sports team, the fixed mindset individual would be out to be the “star” rather than focus on teamwork. When it comes to health, fixed mindset individuals view themselves as victims of their circumstances.
But those with a growth mindset view life as a set of challenges and learning opportunities. Any skill can be learned or improved upon with the right outlook and practice. Those with a growth mindset find success in learning to put forth their best effort. They seek improvement over outcomes. They view setbacks as an opportunity for learning and growing rather than failure. Growth mindset individuals take charge of the processes that lead to success. They are not about “winning”, but about being better every day. They don’t view themselves as victims of their circumstances.
We've noted those able to adopt a growth mindset for their health tend to be far more likely to achieve their goals. Individuals trapped in a fixed mindset stay where they are.
Your mindset won't change overnight. Review these steps as often as needed and you'll start to see your health blossom.
